UHF 437Mhz optimized 8-el Quagi PVC Antenna
thingiverse
This is a high gain linearly polarized UHF antenna designed using PVC pipe as the boom. The use of robust brackets has made this design much more manageable and durable compared to past designs I have used. The posted simulations show the antenna without the 6th element, which couldn't fit in my original design. However, I've included a model for an extension that fits, but it hasn't been tested yet with all elements present. According to simulation results, adding the last element should increase gain to approximately 12.2 dBi. This satellite antenna works well but comes with some drawbacks. Since it's linearly polarized, users might experience drop-outs, have to build two antennas, or find a way to rotate it during transmission. TODO: Consider adding a rifle stock or grip for easier satellite tracking as the current design is somewhat long and heavy, making my wrist ache after a few minutes. Instructions: This antenna is made using optimized NEC files included with the package. The directors are created from 1/8" music wire, cut to precise lengths using a Dremel cutoff wheel. The driven element (DE) and reflector element (RE) are modeled from 4 AWG bare copper wire. One notable challenge in creating this antenna was bending the copper wire without damage. I suggest considering aluminum wire instead. Due to its malleability, aluminum can be shaped more easily using a hacksaw or other common tools. This option not only saves time but also reduces the overall weight of the antenna. To create the required geometry accurately, ensure the stub length matches your simulations and remember that actual world dimensions may differ from calculated ones. The feed point position should be exactly 3cm along the wire path from its centerline to match the simulation results.
