I replaced a record/playback head on my UHER report 4400 a while back. Since I didn't have any NOS Bogen heads, I had to install a new, but incompatible USSR-made head (6Д24.051 for those in the know). The new head is slightly too long for its original mount, causing it to stick out and rub against the tape every time. To prevent this, I designed and built a custom tape guide that pulls the tape away from the head when not engaged. This modification also makes it easier to unthread the tape mid-recording if needed. Additionally, it eliminates the need for a pressure pad altogether.
