The Renault UE Chenillette, a light armored carrier and prime mover produced by France between 1932 and 1940, was created due to the French Infantry's desire for a light armored vehicle capable of towing and supplying small cannons and mortars. In 1931, Renault secured the contract for production of its Renault UE model combined with the Renault UK trailer. The Renault UE2, chosen as an improved type in 1937 for large-scale production, resulted in over five thousand units built, including licensing production in Romania. These vehicles were standard equipment in all French infantry divisions. Most unarmed Renault UE vehicles in French service were captured by Germany in 1940 and repurposed with various weapons such as machine guns, antitank guns, and rocket artillery.
