One North Wacker, formerly known as the UBS Tower, is a 50-story skyscraper located at One North Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois. Construction on this impressive building began in 1999 and was completed in the spring of 2002 with the vision of Lohan Associates (now Goettsch Partners) and developer John Buck Company to meet the needs of UBS groups such as UBS Warburg, UBS PaineWebber, UBS Global Asset Management, and UBS O'Connor under one roof. The UBS Tower was a groundbreaking achievement in Chicago's architecture scene, marking the first large multi-tenant tower constructed in the city after six years since 1993. The building's most striking feature is its stunning main lobby, boasting a glass wall that was a pioneering innovation in the United States at the time of its completion. This remarkable 40-foot glass wall was crafted from 5x5 glass panes attached to a sophisticated system of medallions and cable, which underwent rigorous testing to withstand pressures exceeding 150 psf or wind speeds approaching 250 mph. The glass itself is also noteworthy, utilizing an optical interference anti-reflective glass designed by Schott AG with a remarkably low surface reflectivity of just 1%, giving the lobby an almost transparent appearance. Exterior landscaping was meticulously designed by Peter Walker and Partners Landscape Architecture Inc., a firm based in Berkeley, California. Enclos, a leading facade engineering and curtain wall design company, pioneered the installation of a cable net glass wall at the lobby area of One North Wacker in downtown Chicago. This innovative strategy successfully minimized the visibility of the steel support structure beneath the glass, enabling architect Goettsch Partners to achieve maximum transparency through 15-meter glass facades that wrap around the perimeter of the lobby space, covering an impressive 1,500 square meters of glass. With a total floorspace of 1,754,000 sq ft (163,000 m2), UBS Tower's rents are among the highest per square foot in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, averaging over $25 per square foot on a triple net basis and reaching up to $40 per square foot. The building offers an array of luxurious amenities, including a two-story underground garage for senior executives, One North Kitchen and Bar, a Conference Center, Fitness Center, and Convenience Store. Additionally, the 30th floor features a cafeteria serving a diverse range of traditional and contemporary American cuisine as well as international dishes on a rotating basis.
