Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine - Active Cooling Base
thingiverse
So a friend of mine have asked me, to design an active cooling solution for his UDM because it reached 85 degrees with its build in fan. With this solution we achieved an constant drop to 65 degrees Celsius. We used an Arctic P8 fan (any 80x80x25 fan should work) running on 5V instead of 12V due to the noise level. Sure the results should be even better with 12V, but it had to be silent, because the UDM is in the living room. So we decided to run it from an usb charging brick. Pro tip: Use a LM2596 to optimize the airflow to your surroundings. The fan should blow up. The two rings on the upper part should enclose the base and the UDM. Therefore the air is being pushed into the UDM. Yet an axial fan is not meant to produce pressure and it is even harder to do so with 5V. But with this design we noticed the best improvements. If you can, run the fan with 12V. To reduce vibration I used UHU patafix instead of screws. In order to reduce weight and therefore filament I designed it, to be printed into 3 parts. No Supports are needed! The parts are simply pressed into their final form. To work properly there has to be done some post printing work. We get there in a minute. Feel free to ask me some questions. I am open for constructive criticism. I would love to see this update in as many living rooms as possible. ***Update 23.06.2021 -> V1.1*** Thanks for the feedback. I got several messeges and here are the changes. Shell: - Now the shell has a hole for the wires (I would recomend to glue it, with patafix, since the air can pass trough) - I have increased the diameter for the fit of the feet UpperPart: - The holes for the air is bigger now. So the air is passing trough more easily (therfore less flow noise) Feet: - In generall the diameter is bigger. Yet i give you the choice to choose between 5; 6,5 and 8mm high. I have to say, that i have not tested the update yet. So i only updated the design for everyone who have asked. It would be nice if you tell me, if everything is good now.
