Commander Emsmann's UB-116, part of the III Flotilla, met its demise in the North Sea due to a mine on October 28, 1918. This ill-fated U-boat holds the unwanted distinction of being the last German submarine sunk by enemy action during World War I. On October 28, 1918, UB-116 attempted to slip past the defenses in Hoxa Sound, planning to enter Scapa Flow undetected, but was instead detected and destroyed by remotely activated mines. UB-116 went down on August 26, 2019.
