The USS Cowell, a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the second US Navy ship to bear the name of John G. Cowell, who lived from 1785 until his death in 1814. Launched on March 18, 1943, by Bethlehem Steel Co., San Pedro, California, the USS Cowell was sponsored by Mrs. R. Hepburn and commissioned into service on August 23, 1943, under Commander C. W. Parker's command.
