USS Bennion was a Fletcher-class destroyer that served proudly in the United States Navy. The ship's name honored Captain Mervyn S. Bennion, a courageous leader who made the ultimate sacrifice during the brutal Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor while commanding West Virginia. Posthumously, Captain Bennion received the Medal of Honor, an esteemed award for his bravery. Launched on July 4, 1943, by the Boston Navy Yard, USS Bennion was sponsored by Captain Bennion's courageous widow. On December 14, 1943, Commander Joshua W. Cooper took command of the ship during its official commissioning.
