The Tyrannosaurus, meaning 'tyrant lizard,' is a theropod dinosaur genus. The famous species, Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex), often features in popular culture worldwide. Found in western North America, some scientists consider Tarbosaurus bataar from Asia as another Tyrannosaurus species or a separate genus. Bipedal and carnivorous, T. rex had large skulls balanced by heavy tails. Despite other theropods' size parity or surpassing T. rex, it was the largest known tyrannosaurid and one of the largest land predators, measuring over 13 meters in length and up to 6.8 metric tons in weight. Fossils date back to the Cretaceous Period's last three million years at the Maastrichtian stage (approximately 68.5 to 65.5 million years ago), making T. rex one of the last dinosaurs before the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event. Over 30 T. rex specimens, including nearly complete skeletons and soft tissue discoveries, have been found, permitting extensive research on its biology, life history, and biomechanics.
