Type IX U-boat submarine 3d model

The German Type IX U-boat was a large ocean-going submarine designed by Germany in the years 1935 and 1936. Its primary purpose was to conduct sustained operations far from home support facilities, allowing it to operate effectively in open waters. The Type IX boats saw brief use for patrols off the eastern coast of the United States, where they attempted to disrupt the flow of troops and supplies bound for Europe. The extended range of the Type IX came at a cost: longer dive times and decreased maneuverability. As a result, the smaller Type VII was produced in greater numbers and used for most operations. The Type IX was derived from the Type IA and appeared in various sub-types throughout its production run. Each Type IX submarine boasted six torpedo tubes, with four located at the bow and two at the stern. Internally, they carried six reloads, while externally they had five containers storing ten additional torpedoes each. This total of 22 torpedoes allowed U-boat commanders to shadow convoys and strike repeatedly under the cover of darkness. As mine-layers, Type IXs were equipped with a capacity for 44 TMA or 66 TMB mines. However, many IXC boats were not configured for mine operations due to design constraints. The primary armament consisted of one large Utof 105/45 gun, which was supplied with approximately 110 rounds. The anti-aircraft armament varied throughout the war, but all Type IXs featured two periscopes in their towers. Types IXA and IXB had an additional periscope in the control room, whereas subsequent models like IXC did not.
