The C3 submarine, also known as the I-52-class submarine, was a highly advanced vessel operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Designed and built by Mitsubishi Corporation between 1943 and 1944, these submarines were designed to serve as cargo carriers. Only three of these massive vessels were constructed, despite plans for twenty being laid out. They were among the largest submarines ever built at that time and were considered the most advanced in their class. The I-52 was commissioned into the 11th Submarine Squadron on December 28, 1943, after undergoing training in Japan. She was selected to participate in a Yanagi mission to Germany but was sunk on June 24, 1944, by aircraft from the USS Bogue approximately 800 miles southwest of the Azores. Her cargo consisted of vital supplies including rubber, gold, quinine, and Japanese engineers bound for Germany. I-53 managed to survive the war, but she was scuttled by the US Navy off the Gotō Islands in 1946. I-55 met a similar fate after only three months in commission, being sunk on July 14, 1944, by the USS Gilmer and USS William C. Miller near Saipan. Mitsubishi Corporation built these submarines with advanced capabilities. They featured diesel-electric propulsion systems and could reach speeds of up to 17.75 knots while surfaced and 6.5 knots while submerged. The C3 submarines were designed with a range of over 39,000 kilometers at a speed of 30 km/h and had a test depth of 100 meters. Each submarine was crewed by 94 officers and men and featured an armament consisting of two 140 mm deck guns and six torpedo tubes.
