The 1940 type destroyers are a series of German Navy destroyers that began construction during world war II. Of the 12 ships laid down in Dutch shipyards, three were launched, none of which was completed The ships of this project can be called unique. Their history began in may 1940, when the Wehrmacht occupied the Netherlands. During the survey of the Droogdock shipyards in Rotterdam and De Schelde in Vlissingen, the submerged hulls of the destroyers HNLMS Tjerk Hiddes, HNLMS Gerard Callenburgh, and HNLMS Philips van Almonde were found. All were raised, but only HNLMS Gerard Callenburgh decided to finish building. This ship entered the German Navy as ZH-1.
