Tympanum with the Ascension

This is an exquisite marble tympanum showcasing a breathtaking relief of the Ascension scene. The figures displayed on this relief, with particular attention to the apostles' heads and the awkwardly twisting postures of the angels, demonstrate that Romanesque conventions persisted in Cyprus during the early 13th century. Originally placed above a church doorway, it would have served as an imposing visual element for worshipers entering the sacred space. This remarkable tympanum was unearthed in Larnaka, Cyprus.
