The marble for this commission was shipped to Vinache in 1747 by the Bâtiments du Roi. Vinache left it unfinished at his death, but Gillet finished it in 1758. It adorned the park of the Château de Ménars (Loir-et-Cher) which had been inherited by marquis de Marigny upon the death of his sister, the marquise de Pompadour. The group is heavily influenced by Sarazin's "Children with a Goat", a work that Vinache had copied and restored.
