Workmen digging a drain in Hulme, Manchester in 1821 unearthed carved stones from an ancient temple known as a mithraeum. The mithraeum was dedicated entirely to the veneration of the eastern deity Mithras. Devotees firmly believed that Mithras embodied light. Two loyal companions, Cautes and Cautopates, assisted Mithras in slaying a bull that symbolized evil. Worship of Mithras proved incredibly popular amongst Roman soldiers.
