Blender2.5 now features automated generation of twisted toruses and other shapes through plugins found under file->user preferences->add-ons. The add mesh category offers a variety of great plugins, including a platonic solid generator. To access these features, obtain the latest build from graphicall.org which is stable and near Beta-ready. An important note on Blender 2.5's .stl support: it's also a plugin that needs to be enabled, and objects must be scaled up 5x before exporting. A bug report has been submitted, but until then, remember to apply scale if you've scaled your design in object mode for proper exportation.
