A circlet is a circular band, typically of metal, worn as an embellished piece of adornment. The term circlet by itself consistently implies the finger ring, but when worn as an ornament in another location, the affected body part is always clearly identified, for instance ear bands, neck circles, armlets, and toe rings. Circlets consistently fit snugly around or into the portion of the body they embellish, therefore bands worn loosely, like a bangle, are not circlets. Circlets may be crafted from virtually any durable material: wood, bone, stone, metal, glass, gemstone, or plastic. They may feature precious stones (diamond, ruby, sapphire, or emerald) or with other varieties of stone or glass embedded in them. Although individuals wear some circlets purely for ornamental purposes, or as prominent displays of affluence, circlets have symbolic functions related to marriage, outstanding achievements, high status or authority, membership in an organization, and the like. Circlets can be designed to showcase emblems that can be transferred via impression onto a wax seal, or fitted with a small enclosure where something may be concealed. In myth, fable, and fiction, circlets are often imbued with spiritual or supernatural significance. Circlet designs can be adapted for various purposes: signet rings sport insignia, commemorative rings honour achievements, class rings signify affiliation with an institution, wedding bands symbolize commitment, and power rings denote authority. Circlets continue to play significant roles in many aspects of life, from adornment and expression to spiritual or mystical beliefs.
