Year 5 students were tasked with designing an object inspired by Tom Moore's glass blowing artworks as seen in the Magic Object Adelaide Biennial. They began by creating a 2D design using You Doodle and pencil drawings underneath to visualize their concept. Next, they utilized the Makers Empire app to bring their design to life in 3D. The Up! Plus printer was then used to print out their creations in the Art room. To prepare for printing, students had to set specific parameters such as Rafts and Supports, which didn't matter in this case. Notes were also taken on how to resize or rotate objects for easier printing. After printing, the students observed the Up! Plus 2 in action, marveling at their creations come to life. James, one student, designed a Tom Moore-inspired creature using Makers Empire and then printed it with the Up! Plus printer. He drew inspiration from the Art Gallery of South Australia's Adelaide biennial exhibition Magic Object. This project was part of a larger unit on 2D to 3D designing, inspired by Tom Moore's work. Students were encouraged to explore his website and visit an exhibition at the Art Gallery of SA to see his artworks up close. The task involved examining one of his artworks, doing a drawing on A4 paper, coloring it in on You Doodle with opacity levels to mimic his materials, and then using Makers Empire to create a 3D version. To complete the task, students had to answer questions such as what materials Tom Moore used to create his artworks. The next lesson involved uploading their 2D design to Showbie, saving it with relevant tags, and then printing it out on the Up! Plus 3D printer. Materials needed for this project included paper, You Doodle or image editing software, and 3D designing software like Makers Empire. Students learned valuable skills such as 3D design, drawing, observation, and more, over a duration of 2-4 lessons. Preparation involved setting up the Teachers Portal on Makers Empire, creating a class group, uploading links to Showbie, and referencing Tom Moore's links for inspiration.
