Designed with two operation modes, this engine functions as a jet in the atmosphere. At altitudes above 65,000 feet, oxygen deficiency triggers a switch to rocket mode by utilizing liquid O2 instead of atmospheric O2 for propulsion, enabling orbital ascend. Distinct from turborockets, which burn both types of oxygen simultaneously, this engine operates as an air-breathing rocket but seals its intake for combustion gas retention and has a separate, sealed combustion chamber like traditional rockets. The mechanical section utilizes the APU to power the pumps and air compressor (axial flow fans and centrifugal).
