This is a cutting-edge propulsion system for the legendary SR-71 Blackbird, powered by Pratt & Whitney J58 axial-flow turbojet engines that pushed the boundaries of innovation in their time. The J58 was an engineering marvel capable of delivering a remarkable 32,500 pounds-force (145 kilonewtons) of static thrust, outshining its contemporaries. The engine reached optimal efficiency at a speed of Mach 3.2, which is precisely the typical cruising velocity of the Blackbird. At takeoff, the afterburner provided an impressive 26% of the total thrust, gradually increasing with speed until it accounted for all the propulsion at approximately Mach 3. This game-changing technology enabled the SR-71 to achieve unprecedented speeds and altitudes. The air entering the engine underwent a crucial transformation as it was compressed and heated by the inlet spike and subsequent converging duct situated between the center body and inlet cowl. The shock waves generated slowed the air down to subsonic velocities relative to the engine, making it possible for the air to then enter the engine compressor with ease.
