A turbopump is a propellant pump consisting of two primary components: a rotodynamic pump and a driving gas turbine, usually mounted on the same shaft or sometimes geared together. The purpose of a turbopump is to generate a high-pressure fluid for injection into a combustion chamber or other application. There are two main types of turbopumps: a centrifugal pump, where the pumping process involves expelling fluid outward at high speed, and an axial-flow pump, where alternating rotating and static blades progressively increase the pressure of a fluid. Axial-flow pumps have relatively small diameters but produce modest pressure increases. Although multiple compression stages are required, axial flow pumps perform well with low-density fluids. Centrifugal pumps, however, are far more powerful for high-density fluids, but they necessitate large diameters for low-density fluids.
