Tulpan (lat. Tulipa) is a genus of perennial herbaceous bulbous plants belonging to the Liliaceae family, which comprises over 80 species in modern taxonomy. Originating in the mountain ranges of northern Iran, the Pamir-Alai and Tien Shan, tulip species have evolved over 10-15 million years, spreading westward to Spain and Morocco, eastward to Transbaikalia, and southward to the Sinai Peninsula. Human-introduced forest tulips have also colonized Scotland and the southern coast of Scandinavia. All tulips are adapted ephemeroid geophytes thriving in mountainous, steppe, and desert environments with hot dry summers, cold winters, and brief warm humid springs. From seed to flowering plant, a tulip develops within three to seven years. Unlike daffodils, tulips undergo annual bulb replacement. During the short spring growth period, tulips bloom, produce fruit, and form young bulbs beneath the soil surface, while the faded bulb dies off. In summer dormancy and some species in winter, inside the bulb, rudiments of next year's shoot and flower are formed. In autumn, the bulb develops roots and completes the formation of the fruiting stem.
