Tulipia Tulips forge a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes with storage organs as bulbs. Vibrant flowers bloom large and showy in warm colors like red, pink, yellow, or white. Typically, they exhibit distinct colored blotches at the base of the collective tepals (petals and sepals), internally. Due to population variability and long history of cultivation, classification remains intricate and debated. Tulips belong to the lily family, Liliaceae, along with 14 related genera, where it is closely associated with Amana, Erythronium, and Gagea in the Lilieae tribe. About 75 species exist, divided among four subgenera. The term tulip may be derived from a Persian word meaning turban, thought to resemble the flower. Originating in Southern Europe to Central Asia, they have spread since the seventeenth century and are now naturalized and cultivated globally. Adapting to steppes and mountainous areas with temperate climates, tulips bloom in spring, then become dormant as leaves and flowers die back, only emerging above ground as shoots from underground bulbs in early spring. As Westerners became aware of tulips in the sixteenth century, they observed and reported on them while diplomats visited the Ottoman court. Rapidly introduced into Europe, they caused a frenzy during Tulip mania. Frequently depicted in Dutch Golden Age paintings, tulips have become synonymous with the Netherlands, major world producer ever since. In the seventeenth century, the tulip breaking virus infected bulbs in Netherlands, creating admired variegated patterns in tulip flowers valued for their rarity. While true broken tulips no longer exist, specimens like the Rembrandts are named after renowned artist who painted them. Thousands of hybrid and cultivar tulips have been produced through breeding programs along with the original species known as botanical tulips. Both ornamental garden plants and cut flowers, they are widely popular across the globe.
