Now that wearing a mask in public has become the norm, I've come up with a solution for wearing a mask (face covering) with an added filter. I've tried on numerous facemasks since the pandemic started and purchased the 3M 5711 filters back in March, thinking they'd fit most designs. However, I soon discovered that they didn't quite match my expectations, but could be easily trimmed to size, resulting in a smooth performance. None of the printed masks I've tried have been as comfortable as wearing a tube bandana - my go-to choice is BUFF, the brand used on Survivor. Tube bandanas are incredibly lightweight, don't require elastic bands for support, and can be quickly removed or put back on. They also blend seamlessly into public settings. To make this work, I designed a holder for the 5711 filter that fits snugly inside a tube bandana. The bandana provides standard face covering protection while the filter adds an extra layer of security - its thickness makes it more effective than expected. Using this setup is straightforward: 1) Print using TPU or flex filament. 2) Cut slits in the filter to accommodate the studs. 3) Wrap the combination inside your tube bandana, aligning it with your face so that the filter sits directly in front of your nose. With a wide range of colors and designs available, you can choose tube bandanas that match your wardrobe or personal style. I'm pleased with how this turned out - it's comfortable to wear and functional too.
