Effectiveness of our scanning approach on corroded metallic material, utilizing a metallic cutout of the Teesside University emblem. Metal is notoriously challenging to scan with laser and structured light (particularly structured light) because it scatters scanner beams, and reflects surface texture back to the scanner. This can lead to significant discrepancies between scans. By adjusting our scanning strategy, we can mitigate this issue effectively, although some blurring may still occur. Typically, metallic parts are well-suited for scanning, but complete metal objects pose a much greater challenge. The HP 3D Scanner based on structured light was employed in this endeavor.
