With a width of 8 cm and the oval shape with slightly indented corners (mokkō-gata 木瓜形), this sword guard plate was most likely made for mounting a longsword in the style of a handachi 半太刀. A handachi is a hybrid of long swords tachi 太刀 with a blade length of more than 75 cm and uchigatana 打刀 with a blade length of at least 60 cm. The handachi gained popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries and was carried blade up through the belt by the samurai while traveling or hunting in civilian clothes.
