Truss Design Challenge Experiment - Group 8
thingiverse
Experiment Description For this lab-based experiment, students are tasked with designing a truss or bridge that spans a specific distance and withstands a 100 lb load during a four-point flexure test. The following requirements must be met: • Span length: 400 mm • Width: 75 mm • Maximum height: 75 mm • Maximum weight: 100 grams • Must hold 45 kg (100 lbs) • No adhesives, such as glue, are allowed for connections The challenge for students lies in printing the bridge in separate parts due to its large size. They must design connections that do not rely on adhesives and focus on critical connection points, as they are the weakest areas of their trusses. Group 8's Bridge Design This group designed a bridge with an intermediate approach, featuring five individual components. Their unique "X" shape truss in the middle is complemented by Pratt-style trusses on either end. The total weight of this design is 87 grams, and it can withstand a load of 65 lbs before failing due to lateral overturning. Group 8 recommends incorporating cross bracing instead of straight lateral bracing to enhance their design. Note: The handout for this experiment will be made available soon. A link to the document will be provided in this description once complete, allowing you to replicate this experiment with your students or independently.
