Truncus Arteriosus of the Heart The heart exhibits a typical shape and configuration, though its right ventricle stands out as unusually prominent. Typically, two separate arteries - the aorta and pulmonary artery - emerge from the heart. However, in this instance, a single truncus arteriosus is visible, splitting into an aortic arch and a left-sided common pulmonary artery encircled by a dacron woven fabric band. Just below the band, the pulmonary trunk divides into right and left pulmonary arteries. Visible are both the superior and inferior vena cava on the heart's right side. The entire heart and its associated major blood vessels were removed in one piece for whole organ preservation and paraffin embedding.
