Truncated Octahedron Lamp In geometry, the truncated octahedron is an Archimedean solid with 14 faces (8 regular hexagonal and 6 square), 36 edges, and 24 vertices. Each face has point symmetry, making it a zonohedron. It's also the Goldberg polyhedron GIV(1,1), featuring square and hexagonal faces like the cube. This shape can tessellate (or "pack") 3-dimensional space as a permutohedron. 12" diameter Made of 1/4 Birch plywood and Rice paper. 1 hour of laser cutting with a 100w laser cutter. 30 minutes Materials: 24x32 1/4" Plywood - $10 Dark wood stain - $5 Rice Paper - $4 3m 77 spray adhesive for rice paper - $6 Lightbulb / Lamp Cord - $6 Tools: 100 w laser cutter Any tool that can cut 1/4" will work, including a 60w laser cutter. Instructions: Start by staining the wood, then cut out the pieces using the laser cutter. Cut out the rice paper. Glue the rice paper to the faces. The connectors have different angles on each side. 4-6 125.46 degrees 6-6 109.47 degrees Assemble the lamp. You can also hang it from the cut square piece. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truncated_octahedron Cut out the lightbulb stand and assemble it. How I Designed This: I downloaded a 3d model, brought it into 123Make, scaled it to 12" and unfolded the faces. I then exported it to dxf and designed the decoration. The connectors and slots are based on the angles of the faces.
