A Bb Herald Trumpet is playable and its sound can be heard here: https://youtu.be/qL3ms7lRvDc. It consists of ten pieces printed by a MakerBot and assembled with acetone bonding. The trumpet plays approximately 20 cents flat, possibly due to the Bach 3C mouthpiece not fitting as intended. Though the tone is decent, improvements are needed. The model was rendered using ReplicatorG at a 0.2mm slice layer, three shells, and 20% infill. The STL files were created with a C# program that loosely bases the bell on a paper in the January 2011 Journal of the Acoustical Society of America by Charles Macaluso and Jean-Pierre Dalmont. The printed pieces have stabilizing fins to prevent wobbling or tipping, which can be removed with a one-line code change. Future enhancements include printing fewer pieces and curving the trumpet for better ergonomics, as well as adding rotary or piston valves for lower register play. Microsoft lent the MakerBot used in this project.
