Slide a razor blade under the indicator to pop it loose. The backplate is the stand as well as making sure the spring doesn't go awry. It works more reliably with the backplate attached. Depending on friction you'll need to lift the end of the indicator over the first tick mark and wind it clockwise 2-3 times to pre tension the spring. The back plate has 2 indexing notches at the bottom and a bit of tolerance for the spring. Just a couple dabs of super glue around the circle will get the job done. I recommend AirStick for the base so you can flick it while its stuck to your desk.</p>
