Human beings often refer to physical remnants as the True Cross, claiming they come from the cross on which Jesus was crucified by Christian tradition. According to some historians, such as post-Nicene writer Socrates of Constantinople, Empress Helena travels to the Holy Land in 326-328 to found churches and establish relief agencies for the poor. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, allegedly discovers a hiding place with three crosses said to be used at Jesus' crucifixion, alongside the two thieves, St. Dismas and Gestas. One cross bore a titulus bearing Jesus's name, but a miracle confirms its authenticity. Many churches hold fragmentary remains traditionally believed to come from the True Cross. The bulk of Roman Catholic and Orthodox followers acknowledge them as genuine pieces of Christ's cross. Others dispute their validity mainly due to disagreements between Christians, especially Protestants. A single fragment recently underwent radiocarbon testing by experts at Oxford University and was dated to the 11th century, when forging relics was a widespread practice. Acceptance and belief in the early Christian Church regarding the True Cross is generally limited to Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and the Church of the East. Medieval legends differ concerning the origin of the True Cross between the two Christian denominations.
