Daniel Simon is the chief vehicle designer for TRON: Legacy, responsible for crafting the new fifth-generation light cycle. Many of the vehicle's features, such as its length increasing alongside its speed and the driver's seat without a canopy, are actually carried over from the original TRON light cycle design by Syd Mead. These features were omitted from the original film due to technical limitations, since it was not possible at that time to convincingly combine live-action footage with computer-generated objects. The fifth-generation light cycles are not persistent entities; they are generated from a baton, which splits in half and forms the light cycle between its two halves and below the rider. The remaining halves of the baton also form the handlebars of the light cycle. When creating a light cycle from a baton, the rider typically performs a running leap to assume the necessary posture and clearance from the ground, allowing the light cycle to form.
