Trombone Mouthpiece Customizer
thingiverse
This trombone mouthpiece features numerous customizable parameters, allowing you to create a rotationally symmetric design that closely resembles various commercial options. Users often employ it for warm-up sessions in their cars before rehearsals. The default settings produce a mouthpiece similar to a 4G size. Updates include improved cup geometry based on an analysis of popular mouthpiece curves, and enhancements to the outside shape. However, some difficulties arise when using the customizer to generate STL files. Alternatively, users can edit the scad file with OpenSCAD software. Brass-instrument mouthpieces exhibit intricate details challenging for consumer printers to replicate. To ease printing, these mouthpieces should be printed rim-side up; however, this presents challenges of its own. The current design prints the cup and rim separately to facilitate successful printing. Bezier curves define the shape of the cup and rim, with control points chosen by eye. The outer cup shape primarily focuses on printability without support structures. Post-printing procedures involve sanding and an acetone vapor bath for a smooth finish. Users with Doug Elliott shanks can adapt the printed cup to their shank by inserting it while the mouthpiece is still soft after the vapor bath.
