Archaeologists uncovered a section from a statue depicting the river god at the ancient site of Troy, situated in southern Turkey. As the 1st century dawned, Troy transformed into Ilium and became an important bishopric within the Roman province of Hellespontus. With Roman culture spreading throughout the empire, it seamlessly merged with local customs. During this period, known as the Roman era, the city flourished until the rise of Constantinople brought change to its fortunes.
