Triumph of The Republic in Paris, France

Ten years before celebrating a century since the French Revolution's founding, Paris City Council launches a competition to create a monument honoring the new republican institutions in eastern Paris. The Maurice brothers win the contest and their Monument to the Republic now stands proudly on Place de la République. However, the councilors are impressed by Jules Dalou's project and commission him to cast a bronze version for today's Place de la Nation. His Triumph of the Republic is unveiled in 1899. As an ardent Republican, Dalou chooses to convey a sense of momentum driving humanity towards a brighter future: the triumphant Republic sits atop a chariot representing the Nation, pulled by lions guided by the Spirit of Freedom; Labour (embodied by a blacksmith) and Justice stand beside the chariot; Peace distributes the fruits of prosperity. The dynamic movement of the composition and the exuberant realism of its figures make this study a masterpiece that redefines sculpture's conventions at the time.
