Tripod cam-lock repair for Manfrotto 785b Modo
thingiverse
The locking mechanism on my Manfrotto 785b Modo tripod has begun to crack and break at both points on the second section from the bottom. Apparently, this is a known issue with cheap plastic locks used on other types of Manfrottos as well. Instead of tossing it out, I decided to create a replacement part using ABS, hoping it would be stronger than the original plastic. The printed ABS part should withstand forces better than the original material, but only time will tell for sure. **Replacement Part Instructions** Before installing my 3D printed part, I sliced it using slic3r and opted for support material. It took a little extra effort to remove the supports, but they helped hold up overhanging parts beautifully on the very first print. To get rid of the original camlocks, use a hammer and drift to push out the brass pin first. Then take out the small rectangular block that holds the shaft in place. Once those two steps are complete, you can remove the lock, making sure not to lose any small parts as they come loose.
