Hit HD for Textures! Lately I've been pondering what makes 3d asset creation for VR tick, and I've concluded that props destined for very close-up stereo viewing demand a departure from the traditional hard-surface normal map bake-transfer pipeline. So, with this asset in mind... 1. I used an unusually high amount of 'real' geometry (~64k polys), setting it apart from industry standards. 2. Normal maps were reserved solely for capturing sub-1mm microtexture details. 3. Everything was modeled as a solid, chunky unit. 4. My design aimed for an industrial/commercial aesthetic, prioritizing clean forms and avoiding the 'greeble all the things' approach that's been common since Epic popularized normal map abuse in EU3. The result is an object with a crisp silhouette from almost any angle, standing up to close examination without appearing flat where it shouldn't.
