The triple spiral or triskelion is a Celtic and pre-Celtic symbol that appears on numerous Irish Megalithic and Neolithic sites. Most notably it's found inside the Newgrange passage tomb, engraved on the entrance stone, and etched into some of the curbstones surrounding the mound. The triskele or triskelion belongs to both Buddhist and Celtic traditions, characterized by one shape repeated three times to create a wheel-like pattern. Traditionally, the triskele can manifest as three teardrops, three fishes, three interlocking spirals, or the three legs that give it its Greek meaning - seen in the symbols for the Isle of Man and Sicily. Another intriguing version is the Three Hares Triskelion, which features in both Buddhist and Celtic belief systems. The hare triskelion, in particular, sparks much debate. Since the hare is a nocturnal animal and a lunar symbol (the shape can be identified on the surface of the Moon), it also serves as an emblem of the Goddess. The triskele is a symbolic representation of the significance of the number 3 and the Sun symbol.
