Edinburgh's Coburg Street is home to North Leith Burial Ground, a historic cemetery that dates back to the 18th century. Visitors can explore the grounds and take in the old gravestones, which offer a glimpse into the lives of those who were laid to rest here from 1664 to 1820. A notice at the entrance explains the story behind this burial ground, which was created after the parishioners of North Leith lost their original cemetery when the Citadel was built in 1656. After the Restoration, they were granted land on Coburg Street, where most of the historic ground remains intact, including a small enclosure and approximately thirty gravestones. These ancient stones bear witness to the maritime history that once thrived in this area. Many of them tell the stories of lives shaped by the sea, leaving behind a lasting legacy for those who visit North Leith Burial Ground today.
