BIRUG 27102 holds a fascinating duo – Proetus steininger in its enrolled form and Ceratarges gurich adorned with ornaments. This remarkable find is a piece of the diverse Devonian marine fauna that once thrived in Morocco. Trilobites, which first emerged during the Silurian era, soon became prime targets for fish predators. As a result, many trilobite genera evolved protective features like spines to deter attacks. Ceratarges showcases this defensive strategy through its elaborate ornamentation, while Proetus adopts a different approach – enrolling itself, as seen partially in this specimen. Given their positioning and morphology, both these individuals likely inhabited the sea-floor, with a predominantly dorsolateral field of vision. Free-swimming trilobites usually possess a broader field of vision that encompasses some ventral views alongside their dorsolateral range. This remarkable specimen was meticulously digitized using an Artec Spider 3D scanner by skilled technician Andrew Jones.
