Trilobite model
thingiverse
The David Laser scanner from David-Laserscanner.com is a tool I'm experimenting with, using an inexpensive laser level from Lowe's. My ultimate goal is to scan trilobite fossils, enlarge them, and print out models. Check out my first attempt, which I cleaned up using MeshLab and Blender; however, my printer is facing technical issues, so I haven't printed it yet. I was able to generate nice gcode in repSnapper, and now I just need to fix my wood Mendel. As for ideas on what to do with the model, you could print it out, display it, or even glue a large magnet to the bottom and stick it on your file cabinet. For added fun, consider adding legs and gills (printed separately, maybe out of flexible HDPE). If you're interested in learning more about trilobites, check out Beecher's Trilobite type preservation method or visit Sam Gon's awesome trilobite site at trilobites.info for more information on these fascinating creatures.
