A simple tricklock/puzzlebox. It needs to be assembled, this is not a print-in-place puzzle, so whoever prints/assembles this box will know how to solve it.

The goal is to open the box by pulling on the handle. In the current design, it's possible to open the box right from the start with a lot of force, so tell anyone who wants to solve it not to force it open. The key is semi-optional, but a useful tool.

The screw+thread for the key is taken from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1686322

Print Settings

Notes:

The file called "tricklock_flex" needs to be printed with flexible filament (I used renkforce flex), the rest can be printed with PLA etc. (I recommend printing the key also flexible, if you're afraid that the threading might get broken).

Everything should be printable without support (when rotated correctly). The keyhole in tricklock_box might benefit from support, as does key1.

Post-Printing

Assembly

Sorry for the poor assembly instructions. Once you understand the mechanism, the assembly should be self-explanatory.

To assemble the box, stick the tricklock_lock piece into the tricklock_flex, and the tricklock_flex into the tricklock_top piece, see the image below.

Opening/Closing the lock

To close the lock, put the ring onto the part from above, as shown in the image below (mind the orientation!). Then press the entire thing (making sure that the ring stay in this position) into the tricklock box.
The tricklock has a round hole on one side, and a rectangle hole on the other. Use the key to press into the round hole, such that the tricklock_lock piece goes through and sticks out the rectangle hole (you might need a bit of force for this). While still pressing, start rotating the ring, and then stop pressing. Rotate it until the hole in the ring is on the other side (confer with image of the entire box). You should have felt something locking. To test whether it is locked, try rotating the ring again, it should now be blocked.

To open the lock, do the reverse of closing it. The key can be used as a key for this: The handle of the key is used to press into the round hole, and the end of the key can be used to press into the rectangle hole.
Category: Puzzles
