With its distinctive 3 horns and massive parrot-like beak, the Triceratops skull stands out as one of the largest and most striking on any land animal. These formidable horns were likely used to defend against predators like Tyrannosaurus, and a fossil collected in 1997 shows evidence that some Triceratops even survived these intense battles. The fossil, which features a horn that was bitten off by a Tyrannosaurus, also reveals that the horn healed after being attacked. Evidence from puncture marks on fossil frills suggests that male Triceratops used their horns to fight each other for dominance and to impress potential mates. This behavior is similar to what has been observed in many other horned dinosaurs, which are often found together in large groups due to fossil discoveries of multiple individuals at the same site. While herd behavior can provide a level of protection against predators by warning others of danger and reducing the chances of being singled out, Triceratops was unusual in this regard. Their remains are typically found alone, suggesting that they may have spent much of their lives without companions. The Triceratops frill may have served as an additional layer of defense for its neck, but some specimens show clear evidence of Tyrannosaurus bite marks puncturing the frill, indicating it was not always effective. The frills could also have played a role in attracting mates or regulating body temperature, possibly serving as a way for members of the same species to recognize each other.
