Triceratops translates to "three-horned face". Musée d'Histoire Naturelle (Brussels, Belgium). Made with ReMake and ReCap from AutoDesk. Triceratops is a genus of plant-eating ceratopsid dinosaur that first appeared during the late Maastrichtian stage of the Cretaceous period, around 68 million years ago in what's now North America. It was one of the last known non-avian dinosaur families to exist and went extinct in the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event about 66 million years ago. Unlike many other ceratopsians, Triceratops lacks windows in its neck frill at the back of its skull to reduce weight. The length and shape of the horns as well as the frill vary greatly from one specimen to another, causing some skulls to be incorrectly attributed to different species.
