Trefoil Knot - Version 01

Initially I was curious to see if I could create a trefoil knot in 3D CAD. It turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be, and I was able to create a parametric version of the knot fairly easily. So naturally I had to print out a copy! I'm calling this “Version 01” because I may play around with the CAD to try out some other ideas, although I am not guaranteeing there will ever be additional versions.

Printing

The version I show here is printed at 50% scale in PLA. In addition, I used rectilinear fill and with modifiers to remove the outside perimeters, leaving only the fill “skeleton.” Use the gcode or 3mf file to print a similar version in PLA. Alternatively, you can try other fill settings, etc. to create your own version.

Additional Notes :

I needed to use supports to keep the print stuck to the bed (rafts did not work for me)

The version I printed had some minor defects on the undersides - I just did a bit of trimming with a razor knife

CAD

The OnShape 3D CAD file here :

https://cad.onshape.com/documents/f36468084e28f8df8fa36937/w/4ddd1ec94fcc3fbe8bf684cd/e/e203757048166706b080d91a
