Trees

We're working on a show card image for our upcoming exhibition at Firecat Gallery in Chicago. The title of the show is "Dialogues on the New Plastic" which is a quote (more or less) from the famous Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian. In the original text "Dialogue on the New Plastic" Mondrian imagines a conversation between a musician and himself. In the scene Mondrian explains his shift from representational paintings to more abstracted images - the new plastic. We wanted to re-create one of Mondrian's images (as a 3D print) for the show card - but his signature grids / compositions just did not seem likely to translate too well. instead we decided to work towards an image derived from one of his tree paintings early in his career where he is beginning to reduce these natural forms down to simple curve and colors and to flatten the composition in general. We went for a short walk around our neighborhood with the Sense and my laptop and scanned as best we could as many trees as we could. We knew that the Sense would not capture the forms in full - but rationalized that this would create arbitrary breaks in the forms not unlike Mondrian's paintings. Furthermore we thought that these scans joined together would in effect produce a cubist tree - that is a subject seen from many different angles as a single form or composition. These are the raw scans - if it goes well - later i'll post the tree.
