Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned at Loch Leven Castle from 1567-1568, and during her confinement she had no choice but to relinquish her crown in favor of her infant son James VI. A section of the ancient thorn tree stump believed to be standing at that time is now on display. The upper surface bears a carved inscription: ‘A Piece of Queen Mary’s Thorn Tree Loch Leven 1849’.
