Tree fern stem (Cornell Univ.)

A fragment of a modern tree fern stem is depicted here, likely belonging to the Cyatheaceae or Dicksoniaceae families. Since ferns are incapable of producing genuine wood, they rely on alternative structures for support. The M- and U-shaped formations observed are components of the vascular cylinder, specifically known as a dictyostele. Each individual segment within this structure is referred to as a meristele. This specimen originates from the extensive Cornell University Paleobotanical Collection (CUPC) in Ithaca, New York. Measuring approximately 14.5 cm in length, it has been meticulously recreated by Emily Hauf's skilled model-making abilities.
