In botany, trees rise from the ground as towering, perennial plants with strong, elongated stems called trunks that lift branches and leaves into position in most species. Some people apply a more restricted definition of tree that requires secondary growth in woody plants or lumber usage in specific species, also setting a minimum height standard for these versatile giants. Alternatively, even taller palms, delicate tree ferns, resilient bananas, and incredibly durable bamboos qualify as trees when classified under wider definitions. Trees form a diverse category but are not part of a unified taxonomic group; they have evolved independently as distinct plant species to overcome the competition for sunlight by growing high into the air with sturdy trunks and sprawling branches.
